'Absolutely embarrassing': Internet trolls Dr Mehmet Oz as embattled John Fetterman wins in Pennsylvania
PENNSYLVANIA: John Fetterman, serving as the 34th Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania since 2019, has defeated Republican Dr Mehmet Oz in a dramatic race. The numbers indicate a cut-throat competition between both candidates. The seat will now be handed over to a Democrat as Fetterman will succeed retiring GOP Sen Pat Toomey. Fetterman led by more than 1 percentage point with about 90% of expected votes being reported. The winner later took to his social media to announce the news.
The numbers reveal that Fetterman led Oz 49.4% to 48.1%, a margin of about 66,000 votes, to take control of the open seat as Republican Toomey opted against seeking re-election. As the former Mayor of Braddock from 2006 to 2019 and then later as lieutenant governor, Fetterman focused on marriage equality, legalized marijuana, and pressed for second chances for criminals, including those serving a mandatory sentence for second-degree murder. However, right before he won the May primary, he couldn't campaign for months as he suffered a stroke. On the other hand, Dr Mehmet Oz, a celebrity doctor, was hard at work criticizing Fetterman for being soft on crime. Fetterman has been endorsed by Oprah, Elizabeth Warren, Barack Obama, and more. Fetterman's total vote count stands at 25,48,592 and Oz's stands at 24,23,992. Fetterman took to his Twitter to announce the news writing, "It's official. I will be the next U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania. We bet on the people of Pennsylvania - and you didn’t let us down And I won’t let you down. Thank you."
