WASHINGTON, DC: President Joe Biden signed the Respect for Marriage Act, a bill granting law protections for same-sex and interracial couples, on Tuesday, December 13, which took place with thousands of attendees on the White House South Lawn. Before signing it, he said, "This law and the love it defends strikes a blow against hate in all its forms.” “The road for the moment has been long, but those who believe in equality and justice, you never gave up. Many of you standing on the South Lawn here. So many of you put your relationships on the line, your jobs on the line, your lives on the line to fight for the law I’m about to sign,” Biden expressed and further added by saying, “Today, America takes a vital step toward equality, toward liberty and justice, not just for some, but for everyone. Toward creating a nation where decency, dignity, and love are recognized, honored, and protected.”

According to DailyMail, Biden acknowledged the fear that prompted Congress to act, over the conservative backlash over gender issues and alarming incidents of violence against LGBTQ+. He said, "I must acknowledge another we're here. Congress is acting because an extreme Supreme Court has stripped away the rights afforded to millions of Americans that existed for half a century." In November of this year, five people were shot dead and 25 were left injured at a gay nightclub in Colorado Springs. The suspect was charged with hate crimes, reports CNN.
