Christopher Nolan's 'Oppenheimer' featues EPIC nuclear weapon detonation WITHOUT the use of CGI

Christopher Nolan blew up real 747 jet in 'Tenet' instead of opting for CGI, calls it 'impulse-buying'

While speaking in an interview with Total Film Magazine, the 52-year-old director revealed that he recreated the Trinity test, the first nuclear weapon detonation, in New Mexico, with any kind of computer graphics and noted that the entire sequence was a huge challenge for the whole team because of the huge "practical challenges."

“I think recreating the Trinity test [the first nuclear weapon detonation, in New Mexico] without the use of computer graphics, was a huge challenge to take on, " Nolan said during the interview.

The filmmaker got help from Andrew Jackson, the visual effects supervisor, who helped him in achieving a lot of "practical effects" in the movie, but didn't shy away from noticing that he had to overcome a lot of things to even film those scenes.

Nolan said, "Andrew Jackson – my visual effects supervisor, I got him on board early on – was looking at how we could do a lot of the visual elements of the film practically, from representing quantum dynamics and quantum physics to the Trinity test itself, to recreating, with my team, Los Alamos up on a mesa in New Mexico in extraordinary weather, a lot of which was needed for the film, in terms of the very harsh conditions out there – there were huge practical challenges."

This is not the first time Nolan is doing something unimaginable. In 'Tenet', the filmmaker blew up a real Boeing-747 for a crucial scene. On the other hand, he closely worked with NASA scientists while making 'Interstellar' so that he could get everything right when the space sequences are shown. He is undoubtedly one of the most remarkable filmmakers of this generation.

'Oppenheimer' sees Cillian Murphy playing the titular character J. Robert Oppenheimer and Emily Blunt as Katherine Oppenheimer. On the other hand, actors such as Robert Downey Jr. (Lewis Strauss), Matt Damon (Leslie Groves), Florence Pugh (Jean Tatlock), Rami Malek, Gary Oldman, Dane DeHaan, Kenneth Branagh, David Dastmalchain, Casey Affleck and more will be seen in pivotal roles.

'Oppenheimer' is scheduled to hit theatres on July 21, 2023.
