Critics' Choice Awards 2023: 'RRR' creates history by nabbing 5 noms, becomes first Indian movie to be nominated for Best Picture

Critics' Choice Awards 2023 Nominations List: 'Everything Everywhere All at Once' leads with 14 noms, 'The Fabelmans' and 'RRR' triumph

As per the nominations, the period drama will be up for Best Picture at the next year’s ceremony. The movie will be going against the likes of ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, ‘The Fabelmans’, ‘Babylon’, ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’, ‘Elvis’, ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’, ‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story’, ‘TAR’, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, and ‘Women Talking’. On the other hand, SS Rajamouli will also be in contention to win an award this time around as he is on the list of filmmakers nominated for the Best Director trophy.

Other filmmakers to be nominated for the prestigious accolade include James Cameron (‘Avatar: The Way of Water’), Damien Chazelle (‘Babylon’), Baz Luhrmann (‘Elvis’), Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’), Martin McDonagh (‘The Banshees of Inisherin’), Todd Field (‘TAR’), Sarah Polley (‘Women Talking’), Gina Prince-Bytherwood (‘The Woman King’), and Steven Spielberg (‘The Fabelmans’).

Apart from the aforementioned awards, ‘RRR’ is also nominated for Best Visual Effects, Best Foreign Language Film, and Best Song (‘Naatu Naatu’).

‘RRR’ has been one of the most popular titles in the world right now and garnered a lot of recognition from around the globe. The movie focuses on two Indian revolutionaries - Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem - in the 1920s. The film stars Ram Charan and NT Rama Rao Jr. in the lead roles. The movie received universal acclaim from critics as well as audiences and went on to earn more than $175 million globally, becoming the third highest-grossing Indian movie of all time.

The nominations at the Critics’ Choice Awards come a couple of days after it received two nods at the Golden Globes, including Best International Feature. On the other hand, in recent weeks, the film has gone on to win trophies at the Atlanta Critics Film Circle awards, Hollywood Critics Association Awards, Saturn Awards, New York Film Critics Circle Awards, and Boston Society of Film Critics’ Awards.

Meanwhile, the National Board of Review included ‘RRR’ in the list of the organization’s Top 10 films of the year which included ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, ‘Aftersun’, ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, ‘Glass Onion’, ‘Women Talking’ and more.
