The blow from Trump came just days before DeSantis's re-election in Florida. In sharp contrast to this, Trump had in July told The Wall Street Journal that he would support DeSantis’ bid for reelection. It is speculated that DeSantis' re-election will build up his national profile and will make him a threat to Trump’s presidential run.

Neither Trump nor DeSantis has announced plans to run for president in 2024, though both are rumored to be potential candidates. However, a report by Axios suggested that Trump’s team is considering launching his presidential bid on November 14, 2022, less than a week after voters head to the polls in the midterm elections.

Trump routinely out-performs DeSantis in polls of Republican voters ahead of 2024, but the governor remains Trump's most prominent potential rival. On several occasions, Trump has shared videos and articles on Truth Social that state that DeSantis would get destroyed if he ran against the former president.

The rift between the two camps began sparking a long time ago. But DeSantis dismissed all such reports and claimed that "Trump is his friend."
