FedEx shooting: Who was Indianapolis shooter? Gunman and 8 victims die in mass casualty near airport

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA: Eight people were killed and several others were injured in a shooting at a FedEx warehouse near Indianapolis Airport and the suspected gunman killed himself, according to police. Police were called to the scene at around 11 pm local time, and are currently responding to the event.

Indianapolis police spokesperson Genae Cook confirmed in a press conference that eight people died. The gunman died by suicide and there was no further threat to the community, she added. The shooter has not been identified yet and we will update this space with the latest developments.

Public Information Officer Sgt John Perrine tweeted, "I-70 is closed in both directions between I-465 and Ronald Regan Pkwy due to police activity in the area. Please seek alternate routes" shortly after police arrived. Since then, the highway has been reopened with access to the airport, but access to Ameriplex Parkway is still closed. Details of the shooting are sketchy right now, since the police are yet to issue a full statement.

Perrine also announced that the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) would make a statement shortly from the Townplace Suites by Marriott nearby. A time for the statement was not given.

It was unclear right now how many shooters were involved and how many are injured. A tweet showed one witness tell someone not on camera, "I remember 1 guy showing up and he pulled out another gun."

Intel Point Alerts reports that there have been eight victims of the shooting. Another Twitter account reported "6-8 dead". We cannot confirm any of these details at this time. A stream on Citizen reports that five have been killed, while others have been taken to local hospitals.

Journalist Matthew Keys tweeted: "More: Law enforcement source says 10 people suffered critical injuries, more than 20 people suffered serious injuries and more than 30 people were "walking wounded" in mass shooting incident at FedEx facility in Indianapolis."

FedEx issued a statement, saying it is cooperating with authorities regarding the incident. “We are aware of the tragic shooting at our FedEx Ground facility near the Indianapolis airport," FedEx said in a statement. "Safety is our top priority, and our thoughts are with all those who are affected. We are working to gather more information and are cooperating with investigating authorities."
