'High School Musical: The Musical: The Series': Release date, plot, cast, trailer, and everything you need to know about Disney's reboot

Rise and shine Wildcats, because your time is finally here. After over a decade of wallowing in the post 'High School Musical' misery, it is officially time for East High to reprise its role as the host of Wildcats with Disney Channel's very own streaming service Disney+.

Arriving at the streaming platform this November, the series will be everything 'High School Musical' with a docuseries twist, called 'High School Musical: The Musical: The Series'.

Think mockumentary styles as you've seen in 'The Office' and 'Modern Family', but here, pupils attending East High — the titular high school from the 'High School Musical' franchise — will be asked to put up their own musical.

Will old songs be coming back? Will the original actors reprise their roles somewhere along the way? Most importantly, will we see Troy and Gabriella 10 years from where we left them in 2008? Here's all you need to know:

Release date

'High School Musical: The Musical: The Series' is all set to arrive on Disney's streaming platform, Disney+, this November 12. The series will be 10 episodes long and will drop all together on the forum.

Plot

According to the official synopsis of the show, the series will follow "a group of students at East High who stage a performance of High School Musical for their winter theater production, only to realize that there is as much drama that happens offstage as there is onstage."

The story follows basketball prodigy Troy Bolton (Zac Efron) who falls in love with the new girl and chemistry wizard, Gabriella Montez (Vanessa Hudgens), but once the two realize their talents in singing for their school's annual musical, the entire universe comes together to keep them apart.

Spoiler alert: The world doesn't stand a chance against Troy and Gabriella 'Breaking Free'. What's better? Every episode in the series will have a new rendition of a song from 'High School Musial' as well as an original song. 

Creator

Young adult novel writer Tim Federle is the show's creator along with Disney+. Federle, known for the animated movie 'Federland', will serve as writer and executive producer. Oliver Goldstick was initially serving as showrunner for the first few episodes before Federle took over from him. 

Cast

For those aching to find out whether the OGs are reprising their roles or not, all we can say right now is that Zac Efron hasn't totally snubbed the idea. Understatements aside, he sounded quite thrilled about making a cameo, when he told Extra "Absolutely… I don't see why not. I'm not, like, committing to it — I didn't know there was [a series]." 

But what is final right now, is a young, vivacious cast of actors who are about to bring to life the signature characters that every high school brags of. Joshua Bassett stars as Ricky, a "snarky sweetheart", who auditions for the school musical to win back the love of his recently-turned-ex girlfriend, Nini, played by Olivia Rodrigo. Nini has been raised by her two moms and is "Most likely to have a Hamilton lyric as her senior quote."

So we have our Troy and Gabriella 2.0, but our vindictive queen bee aka Ashley Tisdale's Sharpay 2.0 appears in the form of Sofia Wylie's character, Gina, who has been a viral Instagram singer and wouldn't hesitate to push you down a flight of stairs.

Padding on with more Sharpay vibes will be Matt Cornett's EJ, who is what Disney calls an 'entrepre-nerd.' He becomes Nini's new love interest because he is that character who basically gets whatever he wants. 

Kate Reinders, Julia Lester, Larry Saperstein, Dara Renee, Frankie Rodriguez, and Mark St. Cyr also star.
