WASHINGTON, DC: The House January 6 Committee voted on Monday to recommend that the Justice Department seek a slew of criminal charges against former President Donald Trump for his participation in attempting to overturn the 2020 election and inciting a murderous mob at the Capitol. Trump is the only president in US history to have been impeached twice. Now, he is also the first president ever to be formally submitted by Congress for potential criminal prosecution.

The select committee also targeted Trump's senior loyalists — both on and off Capitol Hill — who collaborated with the 45th president to obstruct certification of Democrat Joe Biden's election victory and keep Trump in power illegally. The Jan. 6 committee is urging DOJ to consider a number of charges against Trump, including conspiracy to defraud the federal government; obstruction of an official proceeding, in this case, Congress’ certification of electoral votes; conspiracy to make a false statement; and inciting or assisting those in an insurrection.

Obstruction of an official proceeding, conspiracy to defraud the US, conspiracy to make a false statement, and inciting, assisting/aiding/comforting an insurrection are the charges he is being referred for. As the news makes its way out, the Internet has erupted in both support and opposition to the criminal referrals of the former President as some remain curious if Trump would face jail. "Trump will be in jail soon. Too bad it's not a maximum security prison in Siberia and will be a country club for white-collar criminals. But at least the guy is a dunzo. Jan. 6 committee refers Trump to DOJ on 4 criminal charges," one user wrote. Another noted, "As long as Jack does his job, this is an early Christmas present! We will not have to worry about TFG serving in any public service capacity. Merry Christmas!!! Jan. 6 committee refers former President Trump to DOJ for potential criminal prosecution". He should be never elected again were the remarks many users made, "Is this the rights response to this? Our work on the January6thCmte has led us to criminally refer Donald Trump to DOJ. We now turn to the criminal justice system to ensure Justice under the law. The American people can ensure he’s never elected again."

The criminal referrals do not carry any legal weight but represent a symbolic rebuke of Trump, who remains the most influential Republican in the country and has launched another bid for president in 2024, NBC noted. "Trump to DOJ" The J6 committee is a kangaroo court and there isn't a chance in hell the trumped-up charges will stick in a real court. Nice try with this banana republic nonsense," a user wrote on Twitter. "Pride in our constitutional government has been largely restored by today’s Jan 6 House Committee’s final meeting which made a criminal referral of Donald J Trump to DOJ. Let’s hope DOJ continues this critical investigation," one wrote. "Donald Trump, you just got four criminal referrals. What are you going to do now? I’m going to…jail," a user joked. Another curious user asked, "Is Trump going to jail???"
