Jerrod Carmichael to host 2023 Golden Globe Awards as event returns to NBC

Golden Globes will also be the first occasion when Carmichael will host an award show, and it is returning to NBC after two years gap. The network had refused to air the awards show this year amid ongoing controversy regarding HFPA, which is a small group comprising of international journalists, deciding the nominees and winners of the Golden Globe Awards every year. It was slammed for its ‘lack of representation’, after The Los Angeles Times published a piece revealing that in February 2021, there was not a single Black jury member. A representative of HFPA had told the LA Times that the organization was aware of the situation and is “committed to addressing it.”

NBC pulled out in May 2021, and released a statement via The Hollywood Reporter, "We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform. However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right.” It further read, “As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023." The 79th annual Golden Globe Awards went as per schedule in January at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, however, there was no televised coverage of the event, according to People.

The nominations for Golden Globes 2023 will be announced on December 12.
