However, a source close to the star debunked the report and confirmed to DailyMail that the information is false. The rumor of Depp's alleged return to the franchise started making the rounds after a report by The Sun claimed that a sixth film in the franchise is currently in the early stage with a working title of ‘A Day at the Sea’. "Johnny is set to return as Captain Jack Sparrow and is scheduled to start filming at the beginning of February at a top-secret location in the UK," an insider reportedly told the outlet at the time.

"Everything is in the early stages and there is still no director attached to the project, which is being called ‘A Day at The Sea’. Johnny is expected to do a test shoot in early February before the production gets fully underway," the source said, continuing, "A call sheet has been distributed among those in the know. Bruce Hendricks, who worked on the first three films, is named the Executive Producer of the new project."

Last year, Disney confirmed that it is in process of developing a new female-focused version of 'Pirates of the Caribbean' that would feature Margot Robbie in lead. The entertainment company said the project will see Robbie collaborating with the 'Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn' writer Christina Hodson. But earlier this week, the ‘Suicide Squad’ star confirmed that the highly-anticipated film with her in it, will not happen. "We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led—not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story—which we thought would've been cool, but I guess they don't want to do it," she added, hinting that Disney was the one to walk away from the project.
