K-pop News
A decade or so ago discussing the music genre kpop in the English language realm would have raised a few eyebrows and broken the niche-o-meter, but now, thanks to the likes of kpop groups BTS, BLACKPINK and Stray Kids to name just a few, kpop has gone from obscure Asian chic to having a cult social following spanning the globe, and with that stratospheric rise so has the following for kpop news.
And with the surge in the musical genre, there has also been an uptick in the number of people on a search for kpop news (i.e.) updates, photos and videos on their favorite kpop singers, members of their beloved kpop bands, and of course all the dope on new kpop albums, kpop events, and other wagons that follow the musical circus and idols of Korean pop.
MEAWW doesn't just deliver kpop news, we understand it, and that's because our kpop team comprises fans and dare we say connoisseurs of the genre who help deliver a service unlike any other.
The rise of kpop has also seen audiences grow for kdramas (Korean TV series) kmovies (self-explanatory) and anything buzzworthy in the world of Korean entertainment news and Korean gossip in general.
Korean celebrity news is now one of the most-searched celebrity genres in the world with fans regularly spending hours looking up what their favorite stars are doing and seeking out new stars to follow.
Kpop itself burst on to the global music scene back in 1992 with the band Seo Taiji and Boys. But what is now known as kpop idol culture didn’t emerge until 1996 and the boy band H.O.T. They were an immediate hit and the foundation for the modern kpop fan was laid.
The modern kpop fan, or stan (stalker fan) as they are sometimes negatively known, are more than just music lovers: They are activists, social media warriors, and have a huge impact on digital talking points all across the globe. They have even been known to shut-down the social media of various right-wing groups in the US. They also have an unsatiable hunger for kpop gossip.
But post-1996 Kpop faded away from the global music scene. In 2003, however, two bands would cross the sea and break the Japanese market, starting a tremor that created the kpop mountains of today. TVXQ and BoA are rightly known as the vanguard of the Korean Wave or Hallyu, which utilized social media, Korean TV shows and an ARMY of fans to arrive at the supergroups of today, most notably BTS and BLACKPINK.
As of 2019, K-pop is ranked at number six among the top 10 music markets worldwide according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry’s Global Music Report 2019. And an avid reader of kpop breaking news will know that the numbers speak for themselves, take this for instance: BTS became the first K-pop group to reach number 1 on the Billboard 200 with ‘Love Yourself: Tear’. ‘Map of the Soul: Persona’ later became the best-selling album ever in South Korea, with more than 3.2 million sales in less than a month.
On December 31, 2019 the members of BTS performed at the New Year’s Eve celebrations in Times Square in New York City in front of one million spectators and a television audience of over one billion people.
