The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department released a notice, stating, "Man was found deceased outside of his home on September 3, near the 7200 block of Bronze Circle. According to New York Post, The newspaper’s top editor said the staff was “devastated to lose Jeff.” “He was the gold standard of the news business,” said Executive Editor Glenn Cook. "It’s hard to imagine what Las Vegas would be like today without his many years of shining a bright light on dark places," added Glenn in the statement. He also explained that German had not communicated any concerns about his personal safety or any threats made against him to anyone in the Review-Journal’s leadership.

The officers believe that the confrontation occurred the day before his body was found. The newspaper reported that a 911 caller said German’s body was found on the side of his home. The police are still investigating his death. “We do have some leads. We are pursuing a suspect but the suspect is outstanding," said Capt Dori Koren of the Las Vegas police. Koren also stated that the stabbing is believed to be an isolated incident and that there is no threat to the public. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Clark County spokesman Dan Kulin said Sunday afternoon the county coroner’s office determined German died “from multiple sharp force injuries.” The manner of death is homicide.

"LVMPD enacted its major case protocol Saturday in the homicide investigation, this brings together a variety of resources to maximize the investigative effort and apply a sense of urgency to the apprehension of the suspect," the department stated. German was also the author of 'Murder in Sin City: The Death of a Las Vegas Casino Boss,' a 2001 true-crime book about the death of Ted Binion, the heir of the Horseshoe Club Fortune.
