LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK: Ex-NYPD police officer Michael Valva, convicted of murdering his own autistic son, was sentenced Thursday, December 8, in Suffolk County Court. Judge William Condon sentenced the disgraced police officer to 25 years to life in prison. That's the maximum sentence for second-degree murder, which he was found guilty of in November. Valva had locked his son Thomas in an unheated garage, where the 8-year-old boy apparently died overnight due to freezing temperatures.

His older brother, Anthony, 10, was subjected to the same torture, however, he managed to survive the trauma. It was found that the two kids were exposed to chilling temperatures for up to 16 hours as the mercury fell below 20 degrees. In testimony by an emergency worker who tried to save Thomas said Valva had, “no emotion, no sense of concern,” for his son. He had told the first respondent that Thomas was unconscious when he found him after he hit his head on the door frame. On January 17, 2020, the 8-year-old died of hypothermia.
