Pelosi, a Californian who has twice led Democrats to power in the House and has been a key role in the Obama and Biden administrations' major legislative triumphs, disclosed her plans in a midday floor speech on the House floor, a day after Republicans claimed control of the chamber.

"I never would have thought that someday I would go from homemaker to House speaker," Pelosi said in a statement in the chamber on Thursday, November 17. Pelosi will stay as speaker until a new Congress takes office in January 2023, and she will remain in the congressional seat she initially held in 1987 until January 2025. New York Congressman Hakeem Jeffries is generally poised to take over as House Democratic leader, making him the first Black minority leader in US history, as per the report and the endorsments he has received.

"Thank you all — and may God continue to bless the United States of America," Nancy Pelosi wrote on Twitter with departing remarks with a picture from the floor of the House of Representatives. 

Soon after the announcement, social media users took to Twitter in her praise. "Hell of a speech from Pelosi. If this is truly it for her, I hope everyone realizes what we’re losing. People don’t often recognize greatness when they’re seeing it in real time, but make no mistake, Pelosi is a titan, and one of—if not THE—most influential women of our time," a Twitter user wrote. Another wrote, "@SpeakerPelosi joins the ranks of Sam Rayburn‚ Thomas Tip O' Neill and Joseph Gurney Cannon as one of the great Speakers in American history. Pelosi has been formidable and fearless. She is a patriot who expertly wielded power for the greater good. A trail blazer. #Pelosi." "It was nice having you— Madame Speaker @SpeakerPelosi. We have a new Congress now," one wrote.
