Jokes galore as 'Blockbuster' killed off AGAIN: Years after Netflix put video store out of biz, show gets canceled too
Netflix has made up its mind and will not be reviving 'Blockbuster' for a second season. Starring Randall Park and Melissa Fumero, the series revolves around operating the last Blockbuster Video store in the US. Ironically, this is the second time the streaming giant has put Blockbuster out of business, the first time being when they actually put the popular video rental store out of business. The Internet cannot help but see the irony.
The decision to discontinue 'Blockbuster' was not shocking as the single-camera workplace comedy launched on November 3 but never cracked Netflix's Top 10, as per Deadline. The leading shows and movies are determined by the hours watched and comedy pieces are at a disadvantage considering the episodes are usually half the length. There was a time when the streaming company, still an underdog, was being crushed by Blockbuster, a cultural phenomenon in its time until the tables turned. Netflix wanted to sell its company to Blockbuster for $50 million in 2000 but the latter refused, only to be put out of business. Ironically, one of Netflix's founders Reed Hastings began the company because he was annoyed about a $40 late fee he had to pay for renting out 'Apollo 13' from Blockbuster.
