The officer who was shot had the bullet fragments taken out of his head. However, his skull has been fractured. However, Keith is expected to make a full recovery. This took place on the same day as Mayor Eric Adams' first day in the office. On January 1 morning, Adams succeeded Bill de Blasio as New York City mayor. 

At a press conference following the event, Adams said: "We must not only find a gun but we must also find the person who discharged the weapon and we must find those who believe they will destroy our city with gun and gang violence. That is not going to happen."

Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell accompanied Mayor Adams to the hospital and promised that they would resolve the rising gun violence issues that have been plaguing the city. Sewell said, "I do believe this incident underscores that there are far too many guns out there in the wrong hands."

In a tweet shared by Chief James Essig, it was said, "Early this morning an off-duty Police Officer was shot outside the 25 Precinct by someone who chose to fire a gun. Luckily he is going to be ok. That bullet could have struck anyone. Help us find the person who committed this violent act. Call 1-800-COPSHOT if you have info." Replying to this tweet a user said, "Probably past time to setup a rest lounge inside precincts so officers don’t have to sleep in cars when they have to pull a swing shift."
