Internet slams ‘privileged’ Harry and Meghan for griping about living rent-free in a 'small cottage'

Harry and his mother, Diana, the late Princess of Wales, had spent his childhood living in Kensington Palace. In episode four of their documentary, Meghan described the residence as “small”. She said, “It sounds very regal, but Nottingham Cottage was so small.” Harry added that the residence was “lean” with “low ceilings.” He continued explaining, “As far as people were concerned, we were living in a palace. We were living in a cottage. On palace grounds.”

He added, “Kensington Palace sounds very regal, of course, it does say palace in the name. But Nottingham Cottage was small.” Meghan also claimed that Harry continually banged his head against the ceilings due to his towering height. However, the couple’s remarks about their rent-free residence in one of London’s wealthiest areas received plenty of backlash as a Reddit user mocked the pair with, “The fact that they had to live in a small cottage crushed their will to live. I wonder if they had to eat off of plates that had NO gold trim? That might have been the final straw."

Another pointed out, “For a small cottage that isn’t suitable there sure is a lot of Royals who have been living there, including the future King and Queen of England.... but it wasn’t enough for Harry and Meghan?” One social media took a jab at the pair, penning, “I just can’t believe that the British taxpayers would be so selfish as to not pay for a brand new humongous mansion with 16 bathrooms and a mama and papa palm tree to be built for H&M in a completely isolated and private part of London next to fabulous shopping, entertainment and nightlife.”

Another noted, “As I said elsewhere, that “small cottage” is also almost twice the size of the average London home, designed by Christopher Wren, rent-free, and in Kensington, one of the wealthiest neighbourhoods in central London. They’re complaining about something that’s not even attainable for the most privileged 0.01% of the population.” And one joked, “It wasn’t good enough for their friends Oprah and Beyonce. That’s all that matters,” recalling that Oprah had visited the couple at the residence.

For the unaware, Kensington Palace Gardens is the most expensive area in London in terms of real estate, as per Home Views. According to the outlet, an average home in the area goes for a minimum of $43M. Other than royal family members, other notable people living in the area include Indian steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal and socialite Tamara Ecclestone.
