After San Francisco dumped Chesa Boudin, will these SUPER-WOKE DAs be kicked to the kerb next?

Boudin's ouster, which was approved 60% to 40%, is a wake-up call for many other 'ultra-liberal' district attorneys. Here is a list of soft-on-crime DAs (notably all Democrats), who may face the voters' wrath if San Francisco is indeed the trend-setter on how crime-plagued districts are voting.

Alvin Bragg, Manhattan

According to the New York Post, Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg was met with immediate outrage from police, local businesses, and others when he unveiled his "Day One" policies that included jailing only the most violent criminals and ordering prosecutors to downgrade some felony charges to misdemeanors. The major crime rate is up 43.2% from last year in his district. Although Bragg walked back two of his most controversial directives, he said on Tuesday, June 7, that he hadn't been paying attention to Boudin's recall election.

George Gascon, Los Angeles

A former LA cop and police chief in Mesa, Arizona, George Gascon ordered prosecutors to abandon the death penalty, halt adult prosecutions of juveniles, and refrain from seeking enhanced sentences for repeat offenders under his “visionary approach to criminal justice reform.” An initial recall attempt was dropped in September due to pandemic restrictions, but a second effort was launched by the L.A. County Registrar of Voters’ Office in January, with a deadline on July 6 to potentially put the plan up for a vote. Notably, Gascon's Deputy DA Jonathan Hatami announced the formation of a pro-recall PAC as he accused his boss of having “basically said wrongdoers will not be held accountable for their actions.” Total crime in his district is up 11.9%, year to date.

Kim Foxx, Chicago

 

Cook County State's attorney Kim Fox sparked controversy when she dismissed charges against actor Jussie Smollett for his hate-crime hoax in 2019, sparking an investigation that found she lied to the public about her communications with the actor's sister. Then, a 2020 probe by the Chicago Tribune found that her primary tool to reduce crime in her district was to drop nearly 30% of all felony cases, including alleged murders. In March, she began seeking early release for inmates who had served at least 10 years of their sentences for crimes other than homicide or sex offenses. She called it an effort to “not just acknowledge the wrongs of the past, but try to correct them.” The major crime rate in her district is up 34% from last year.

Larry Krasner, Philadelphia

Philly DA Larry Krasner vowed to begin “trading jails — and death row — for schools” and “trading division between police and the communities they serve for unity and reconciliation.” However, in his first term alone, a staggering 261 prosecutors — including 70 he hired — resigned, while the city recorded a whopping 562 homicides last year. The total crime rate in Philadelphia is up 22.2% from last year, when Krasner's office reportedly opened just 22,939 cases, down 41% from 2017, the year he was elected district attorney.

John Chisolm, Milwaukee

While crime in Milwaukee County is down this year, last year saw an overall surge of 26.4%. Woke DA John Chisolm drew the ire of many last year after it emerged that Darrell Brooks — who allegedly killed five people by plowing his SUV into the Waukesha Christmas Parade on November 21 — had been released from custody just 10 days earlier because one of Chisolm's prosecutors recommended a slap-on-the-wrist $1,000 bail when Brooks was charged with using the same vehicle to run over a woman with whom he has a child.

Kevin Hayden, Boston

Suffolk County DA Kevin Hayden announced last month that his office would spend $400,000 in asset-forfeiture funds on diversion programs for drug-addicted and mentally ill defendants. Hayden, who is facing progressive Boston City Councilor Ricardo Arroyo in the September 6 Democratic primary election, is touting his signature “restorative justice” program on his campaign website. The controversial program reportedly spares some criminals jail time if they agree to do things like write letters of apology, make restitution, perform public service, and engage in "reflective exercises," per The Post.

Kim Gardner, St. Louis

Kim Gardner's popularity took a toll following her prosecution of former Republican Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens, who resigned from office in 2018 after she dropped charges tied to his campaign fundraising efforts.

Then, in April, Gardner raised eyebrows when she reportedly struck a deal with the Missouri Office of Disciplinary Counsel over claims that she gave Greitens’ lawyers all the evidence against him, something the agreement called “negligent or perhaps reckless, but not intentional.” The deal reportedly calls for a public reprimand from the Missouri Supreme Court, but grand jurors who indicted an investigator in the Greitens case demanded harsher punishment last month for Gardner's "reprehensible" conduct.

Mike Schmidt, Portland, Oregon

Multnomah County DA Mike Schmidt, who was acting DA for about five months before officially taking office, lauded protests over George Floyd's death during his inauguration speech in January 2021.

Schmidt said the demonstrations “taught us lessons we should have learned decades ago, and we fail to internalize them at our peril. The first: Black Lives Matter. Again: Black Lives Matter. Black Lives Matter. Black Lives Matter.” However, the ultra-woke DA appeared to have grown fed up with the movement less than four months later, saying the “violence and property destruction we’ve seen…is unacceptable.” It's worth noting that the total crime rate in Multnomah County is up 29.5% from last year, the Post reported.
