Who is Shiam Sunder Shankara Subramanian?

Shiam Sunder Shankara Subramanian, an engineer, is an Indian national who is in the United States on a work visa. Bartholomew Circuit Judge Kelly Benjamin sentenced the defendant to six years in prison for fleeing the scene of a fatal or catastrophic accident, a Level 4 felony. She stated that two of those years would be spent on probation. In addition, Subramanian received a Level 5 sentence of three years in prison for passing a school bus when the arm signal was extended.

However, it was mandated that the second term be served concurrently with the first. In addition, the judge noted that Subramanian would be sent back home after serving his sentence. His defense claimed that he is unlikely to commit a similar offense again and will respond favorably to a short-term sentence.

“Had I known that someone was on the road, I would have stopped and not hit Lily,” Subramanian said in a prepared statement, as reported by The Republic. “I want the Streeval family to know I am extremely remorseful. It was a tragic mistake.”

Investigators claim that Subramanian struck Streeval as she crossed two lanes of traffic to catch the school bus. Subramanian allegedly left the scene but was caught after his car got stuck in a yard in Columbus, 40 miles south of Indianapolis.

In 2019, Indiana introduced stiffer sanctions for drivers who pass school buses with extended stop arms after three children died while crossing a highway to board a bus.
