Talking about it on the docu-series, Harry recalled the time a publication had written that Meghan was “straight out of Compton,” a dig at the former actress’ race. When the pair had apparently brought up the subject at the palace, they were directed to give “no comment.” Harry then explained that he felt the need for people to understand that everything that Meghan faced was something all the other royal family members had also faced at some point, saying that it had almost become a “rite of passage.”

Harry continued to reveal that some of the royal family members had dismissed his attempts to protect Meghan because, according to them, their wives had to endure the same harassment by the press. As per Harry, his family had questioned, “So why should your girlfriend be treated any differently? Why should you (Harry) get special treatment? Why should she (Meghan) be protected?” Harry then noted that the difference in their case was “the race element.” The documentary then panned out to show different headlines by the UK media, which stated things about the former actress such as “One’s gone GangstER”, and another saying Meghan’s ancestors were a “tailor, a teacher and a cleaner in racially divided Jim Crow South”.

Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, also spoke about the allegedly ‘racist’ press coverage and said paparazzi would take pictures of deprived neighborhoods in Los Angeles. “They would take pictures of different parts of, say, Skid Row, and say that is where I lived, and that is where she was from,” she said in the documentary.

“It was horrible,” Meghan added. She resumed, “But I continued to hold the line. Say nothing.” Meghan also recalled a horrific incident when her mother was called by the “N-word” by a White woman when they were driving. She said, “I had never in my life heard someone say the N-word.” She added, “Very different to be a minority but not be treated as a minority right off the bat.” She continued to say that before going to the UK, most people did not treat her as a woman of color.

But Meghan’s statements seemed to have irked social media users as many claimed that she was the one who was making it about race. A Twitter user wrote, “How is a black woman treated in the UK? Please enlighten me, Meghan? The only people who speak on race are themselves internally motivated by race. Everyone else just treat people as they treat them. You got ridiculed for behaving ridiculously not for your race!” While another chimed in with, “There it is.. she was able to pass as white through most of her life and I'm sure that was of great benefit to her. Now she wants to use "being black" as or for her. Not because she actually feels a connection to it or has lived life as a black woman. Who doesn't she use?!?!”
