WASHINGTON, DC: The House January 6 Committee voted on Monday to recommend that the Justice Department seek a slew of criminal charges against former President Donald Trump for his participation in attempting to overturn the 2020 election and inciting a murderous mob at the Capitol. Trump is the only president in US history to have been impeached twice. Now, he is also the first president ever to be formally submitted by Congress for potential criminal prosecution.

The select committee also targeted Trump's senior loyalists — both on and off Capitol Hill — who collaborated with the 45th president to obstruct certification of Democrat Joe Biden's election victory and keep Trump in power illegally. The Jan. 6 committee is urging DOJ to consider a number of charges against Trump, including conspiracy to defraud the federal government; obstruction of an official proceeding, in this case, Congress’ certification of electoral votes; conspiracy to make a false statement; and inciting or assisting those in an insurrection.
